Fleas: harmful jumping insects
Fleas are wingless insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, including humans. They are characterized by their highly developed hind legs, which enable them to make impressive leaps to reach their prey. Different species of flea are known, including the human flea, dog flea, cat flea, rodent flea, bird flea, mole flea, rabbit flea and hedgehog flea.
THE HUMAN FLEA
Length: 1 to 4 mm long.
Appearance: Fleas are black to dark brown, wingless insects.
Reproduction : 4 to 8 eggs after each meal.
Habitat: These fleas bite humans on the ankles and legs, usually two or three times in succession.
Adult fleas are 1 to 4 mm long. They move in characteristic jumps 30 to 40 cm high. They bite their host's skin and suck out its blood.
THE DOG FLEA
Length: 1 to 4 mm long.
Appearance: Adult fleas are brownish-black.
Diet: Feeds on dried blood, feces and organic matter collected from infested areas.
Habitat: These fleas bite humans on the ankles and legs, usually two or three times in succession.
Adult fleas measure 1 to 4 mm in length. They move in characteristic jumps 30 to 40 cm high. They bite their host's skin, sucking out its blood. The bite can cause itching and hair loss. Their cycle passes from egg to larva to pupa, ending up as a perfect insect.
CAT FLEA
Length: 2 to 3 mm long. Wingless.
Appearance: Adult fleas are brownish-black.
Diet: Feeds on dried blood, excrement and organic matter collected from infested areas.
Habitat: These fleas bite humans on the ankles and legs, usually two or three times in succession.
Narrow, flat body, 2-3mm long, wingless. Its long, strong rear legs enable it to jump high. It can be distinguished from other fleas by the highly developed combs on its cheeks and pronotum.
