These are wingless insects, with a full cycle of metamorphosis. Unlike crawling or flying insects, these jumping insects have extremely well developed posterior legs and can jump 30 to 40 cm in height to reach their prey. There are many species :

- Bird fleas, including the pigeon (Ceratophyllus gallinae)

- Length: between 1 and 4 mm long.
- Appearance: The fleas are insects black to dark brown in colour, without wings.
- Reproduction: 4 to 8 eggs after each meal.
- Habitat: These fleas bite humans on the ankles and legs, usually two or three times in succession.
Adult fleas measure 1 to 4 mm long. They move by the characteristic jumps of 30 to 40 cm high. The bite the skin of their host and suck the blood.

Narrow and flat body, it is between 2-3mm and has no wings. Its long, very solid hind legs allow it to jump high. It is different from other fleas by very developed combs on the cheeks and the pronotum.
